Should Bess storage be paired with large solar assets?
The Dominican Republic’s National Energy Commission (CNE) issued a resolution in February 2023 that requires BESS storage to be paired with large solar assets. However, the renumeration is not yet clear and developers are concerned about interconnection delays for their BESS assets.
Does Mexico have a front-of-the-meter Bess market?
Mexico’s front-of-the-meter BESS market is practically nonexistent. BESS is not defined by law but rather by the market. Storage projects are forced to register as an active power plant (“central electrica”) and be represented by a market participant, in this case, a generator (e.g., IPP).
Are BTM assets regulated in Mexico?
Although there is no regulation against BTM assets, there is also no framework that allows it to be done. Hence, the project is much riskier and subject to the whims of the state utility (CFE) and regulators. Mexico’s front-of-the-meter BESS market is practically nonexistent. BESS is not defined by law but rather by the market.
Where is the VMD Bess project located?
The VMD BESS is planned to be located in Mexico, but would be connected to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) electric grid via an Ienova-owned cross-border transmission line. Ienova said it expects to develop the project in phases, delivering 100 MW at first, and highlighting its potential of up to 500 MW.
